Who doesn't love shimmies? We'll be working on lots of shimmy variations--old fashion shimmies, modern shimmies, traveling shimmies, folk shimmies, layered shimmies and more! We'll then apply our shimmies to Drum Solo Improv techniques!

ZAHRA ZUHAIR: Timeless Choreography

Get on Down and Party: Old School Floorwork & Sword with Princess Farhana

This workshop will take you to a higher level...while you're down on the ground workin' the floor in classic 70's-90's cabaret style.

You'll gain a strong technical foundation for core strengthening and flexibility, retro floor work and sword handling…even with zills! We'll go over dynamic entrances, unique ascents and descents, a few blance points, beautiful layouts, rollovers, and floor transitions.

Many loaner swords (and yoga mats) available for use in class.

10:30am MESMERA: Mesmerizing Veil & Zils

Mesmerizing Veil & Zils

Classic Bellydance Combinations with complimentary patterns and tonal changes on the finger cymbals, and dynamic contrast between Framing and flying with the veil. We will highlight technique, capture the spirit of the music, and convey feeling to captivate your audience with 4-count, 8-count, and 16-count phrases using undulations, shimmies, locks & layers. Please check your elastics and bring your cymbals and veils! A few extra of each will be available to borrow and/or buy.

KAMALA ALMANZAR: Organic Improvisation - The Heart & Soul of Raqs Sharqi

Organic Improvisation - The Heart & Soul of Raqs Sharqi

All Belly Dancers should feel comfortable improvising solos. Often students are taught to rely on a teacher’s choreography, taking away the ability to live and dance in the moment. Kamala helps students feel comfortable with improvisation in a supportive environment, offering tips to help the dancer relax and rely on the music to take her/him to that place of true individuality and self expression.

SAHRA SA'EEDA: Classic Cascades Choreography

Classic Cascades Choreography

Sahra started her bellydance career at one of the legendary Lou Shelaby’s Arabic nightclubs, The Cascades of Los Angeles. Sahra will share an original choreography from back in the heyday with us! A slice of living history….!

Magic in Every Step!

Fahtiem is famous for her dynamic combinations that use the only formula you will ever need — that of finding your own personal magic!! Fahtiem demonstrates how to connect your steps to your inner fire, giving your dance dynamics like never before.

Part of what made the classic US bellydance era so memorable and influential is the individual style that each dancer developed from her own unique set of influences. Even today, every dancer has her own signature movements whether she realizes it or not! This class will give you information & inspiration for how to make these movements the most impactful they can be.

Airports

Participants can choose to fly into either LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) OR Burbank International Airport (see info below). Burbank is a bit closer to DanceGarden, but LAX has a convenient & comfortable shuttle called the "Flyaway" that runs to Union Station which is the closest to the studio. The Flyaway runs every 1/2 hour for $9 one-way, no reservations necessary.

Please contact dancegardenla@gmail.com if you have any questions about transfer from the airport to your hotel.

After visiting local hotels, our top recommendation, where cleanliness, safety & convenience meet affordable price when sharing a room, would be Embassy Suites by Hilton. Suites in this hotel can sleep 3-4 people - - 2 in queen beds and 1-2 in a pullout sofa bed. Please contact dancegardenla@gmail.com if you would like help finding roommates! Full breakfast is included, as is a cocktail hour with drinks/hors d'oeuvres. Wifi is free in the lobby but 9.95 per day in the room.

If you want something a little more budget, but not quite as nice (still seemed clean and decent, but did smell a little smoky despite claiming to be a non-smoking building), you might choose the Days Inn Glendale.
