Sunday July 25, 1:30 - 4:30

Jenna's choreographic style, a blend of classic beauty and modern flair, is praised around the world by fans of her best-selling DVD's. Egypt's Mme. She will break down the combinations and steps, and teach you how to add your personal style into the dance, so you will walk away with a great opening piece you can use for performances.

The workshop is intended for those with a solid grasp of bellydance movement -- Intermediate/Advanced students. Not intended for beginners.

NIA!with Nicole

Thursday May 20 at 6:30 pm
We are testing out some exciting new classes at DG, to find YOUR NEW FAVORITE! So come in and try a class for no charge -- just fill out a quick survey for us at the end!

ABOUT NIA: Nia is a path to condition, heal and express yourself through movement and sensation. With the philosophy "Through Movement We Find Health", Nia is a dynamic blend of dance arts, martial arts and healing arts. Nia balances technical precision with free-form expression, bringing the body, mind, emotions and spirit to optimum health through music, movement and self-expression, guided by the sensation of Pleasure and the Joy of Movement.
The first things you’ll notice in a Nia class are the smiles, fun and genuine sense of joy – in addition to the sweat! Nia is designed for any body: you’ll see bodies of all ages, shapes and sizes, and people from all lifestyles, professions and movement backgrounds in a Nia class. Every Nia class includes both structured and free-form experiences, a harmony of movements soft and powerful, sharp and fluid, linear and spiraling, explosive and relaxing. Vocalizations are used to release tension, activate the imagination, and engage the physical body to increase cardiovascular endurance. Each person’s movement is guided by the voice of his or her own body.

Nicole loved Nia at first dance because of how Nia encourages fun, pleasurable movement and self-expression, as well as acceptance and love for the body just as it is. I became a Nia instructor because I believe in the power of Nia to transform lives and the relationship people have with their bodies. In addition to my formal training and certification as Blue Belt Nia Instructor, I also bring to my teaching a knowledge of the technique and craft of Nia that stems from eight years in Portland, Oregon, where I had the pleasure of studying and dancing with Debbie & Carlos Rosas, the creators of Nia, as well as with many other inspiring and skillful teachers. I have studied and practiced several varieties of yoga and dance, all of which help me to create safe, effective, innovative, and healing movement experiences for my students.

FREE TRIAL CLASS!
Tribal Fusion - Bollywood Elements!
with Samantha, aka 'Calamity Sam'

Thursday May 27 at 6:30 pm
We are testing out some exciting new classes at DG, to find YOUR NEW FAVORITE!
So come in and try a class for no charge -- just fill out a quick survey for us at the end!

Building on the basis of grounded, serpentine movement from Tribal Fusion Style bellydance, we will meld the basics of Bollywood dance(Indian movie dance, aka Filmi) to lighten the step and add sass to your dance. With an emphasis on focus, intention, and connection with your audience (or yourself, in the mirror) this class will bring an element of fun to your movement! You can expect lots of classic and contemporary Bollywood music and basic Bhangra touches. You will learn to infuse your dance with Bollywood moxie without losing your Tribal Fusion intensity. Basic fusion drills for stamina and strength will be a part of every class.

Samantha (Calamity Sam) is a Tribal Fusion belly dance performer. She works with Heather Shoopman, Sherri Wheatley, and Eclectic Ensemble in Los Angeles, and with Electric Vardo in the Bay Area. Having grown up in a family focused on music, Samantha explored dance as a way of expressing her love of music physically. Movement was always a part of her life but, after a friend showed her a performance by Rachel Brice, she felt she had finally found a dance that resonated with her. Sam quickly became obsessed with Tribal Fusion belly dance and studied videos while taking classes to learn the basics of belly dance. When she met Heather Shoopman in January of 2008, Samantha found not only a teacher, but a friend and future dance partner who pushed her to excel quickly in technique and creativity. This creative encouragement naturally lead to Samantha fusing Bollywood with her movement; the dance and music of Indian Films had captivated her for years. She has been performing with Heather since May of 2008, and has created her own distinct style of Tribal Fusion belly dance with heavy influences from Bollywood style dancing.

Guedra Workshop DISCOUNT DEADLINE EXTENDED TO WED. MAR 10!
Sunday, March 14 2010, 1:30 - 3:30pm

Presented by Rosa Rojas of Ballet Afsaneh

Guedra is a ritual blessing trance dance from the Tuareg Berbers or "Blue People". Guedra is performed to envelop all present with positive energy, peace and spiritual love. The rhythmical clapping, chanting, hand and finger movements all have their origin in ancient symbolism. The Blue People consider the Guedra to be their direct contact to the elements, spirit, and the universe. It is the deepest expression of their souls and provides protection against a hostile environment and evil spirits. The Guedra is an Arabic word for a cooking pot or cauldron. The cooking pot was covered with animal skin to make a drum to be played in a heartbeat rhythm.

Rosa's Guedra workshop will begin with a counter-clapping and chanting warm-up. Students will learn two blessing chants and counter clapping in the rhythm of the heartbeat. There will also be a T'bal (standing dance) warm-up. We will then proceed to Guedra on the knees and sitting, and explore the intricacies of hand, arm and finger movement. These symbolic gestures are designed to send blessings to the future, past and present; to the Sun, Earth, Water and Wind. Toward the end of the workshop we will combine all the elements of the Guedra.

Persian Classical Dance DISCOUNT DEADLINE EXTENDED TO WED. MAR 10!
Workshop with Dr. Robyn C. Friend
**Don't miss this rare chance to study in LA with the premiere Persian Dance teacher in Southern California!***
The workshop will begin with a warm-up routine that focuses on posture and alignment, and introduces some basic movements and styling for Persian Classical and Party (bazmi) dance. Dr. Friend will then teach specific movements that will be used in a choreography she will teach. The music for the choreography (by Bijan Mortazavi, “Ey Maah Bebin”) though modern, is suffused with imagery and symbolism from Persian classical mystical poetry. Robyn will explain the poetry and how the dance movements interpret both the poetic ideas and the musical accompaniment. By the end of the workshop, participants will have acquired a basic understanding of how to dance to Persian party music, as well as a small taste from the rich banquet that is Persian Classical dance.

Dr. Robyn Friend is the pre-eminent teacher and performer of Iranian traditional and folkloric dance on the West Coast, with more than 30 years of experience with Iranian dance and culture. She has a Ph.D. in Iranian linguistics, and studied classical Persian music and mystical poetry for nearly 25 years with Persian music master Ostad Morteza Varzi. This combination of artistic and academic work has given her a unique perspective on the role of dance in Iranian tradition, and a deep understanding of the music, poetry, mysticism, expression, and meaning in classical Persian dance. Beloved by the Iranian community of “Tehrangeles”, she has been teaching dance at a local Farsi-language school since 2001.

WORKSHOP

An example of Guedra can be found here

WORKSHOP

WORKSHOP

Spanish-Arabic Dance Fusion with Altagracia of NYC!

Spanish/Arabic fusion music has been a popular choice to add that certain spice and excitement to an Oriental dance show. Dancers want to choose steps that have elements of Spanish dance -but the dilemma of most dancers is learning what dance steps they can do in the Spanish Arabic secion fo their show. Lack of dance vocabulary can make the dance segments look the same as the rest ofthe dancing despite the change in music styles. Some Spanish dance steps are similar to Oriental dance steps, but they are expressed differently. This workshop will help you structure your show so that the audience hears and sees the differences in the dance styles and moods. Altagracia, coming all the way from Serena Studios in NYC, will be using Spanish-Arabic Fusion "Altagracia Style" vocabulary to help identify movements and provide a guide to go by when creating your Spanish-Arabic fusion choreographies or improvisational dancing.

Plus!!: FANS! One of Alta's favorite props. She will teach you to be expressive with a fan in this special Spanish fusion style. The fan can be used in the middle of your performance, or as a spectacular finale.

Learn the basics of tribal floorwork and fusion choreography with the incredible Sherri!

We will learn how to interpret the music and connect with the audience in this particulary strong and sensual dimension of bellydance movement. Strong emphasis will be placed on strength and flexibility conditioning. The workshop will culminate in linking the combinations we learn into a full choreography implementing floor work.

The class will involve moves that require strength and flexibility, so is geared towards students who are comfortable with some degree of physical challenge. 5:30 - 7pm. This is the dynamic folk dance you see at every Lebanese gathering. Don't miss this chance to learn the basics of this exciting dance with someone who has learned from the best in Lebanon. This class will be stylized particularly for bellydancers, meaning the movement will be more flirty and "curvy" but still definitely dabke! Since belly dancing and dabkeh are completely different art forms, it will be a beginning level. You certainly don't have to bellydance to take this special workshop, but learning dabkeh will add a new and more diverse dimension to any bellydance performance. And most importantly,it's FUN!!! No bare feet, please - charachter shoes or jazz shoes recommended, sneakers ok.

Ballet for Everybody
Get the grace and balance of a ballet dancer, while increasing your flexibility and strength! Rosanna makes it fun & easy in this class for adults who are new to ballet, or want to get back into ballet shape! You'll do barre exercises, work on beautiful arms in the center, and practice turns & traveling steps across the floor. You don't need to be a prima ballerina to have the grace, poise & posture of a dancer!

SALSA! Salsa is a spicy latin dance form that comes from Cuba and Puerto Rico. This class wll start with a shine (solo dancing) warm up then we will partner up. You may bring a partner, but you don't need one, since we will rotate and this will be a fun way of meeting new people who are into salsa as well! The gentlemen will learn how to be a great Lead and the ladies will be able to follow their every move! Wear comfortable clothes and heels (for the ladies) with a back strap. If you wish to be a bit more comfortable and are just learning sneakers with not too much grip on the bottom will do also. Same goes for the gentlmen, shoes with not too much grip on the bottom. Too much grip may make it more difficult for you to turn. Salsa is fun, flirty and addictive, so don’t say we didn’t warn ya!

Candlelight Stretch
The studio becomes dark, lit by glowing candles and filled with soothing music. Zahra leads you through a series of relaxing stretches after a challenging class - you deserve it! Bring a mat or towel if you like.

Chakra Dance
In the beginning, dance was used for the purpose of worship and healing...a way to connect with spirit, your higher self, and all of humanity. Join Heather for an inner journey to promote spiritual awakening, mental clarity, physical stamina and emotional well-being. You will experience meditation in motion with breathwork, guided trance dance techniques, and partner exercises in a safe environment.

Stretch and Strengthen
Jenna takes you through different exercises to strengthen your muscles, not only for core strength training, but for movements specific to bellydance floorwork, and then leads stretches to lengthen and relax the muscles you've been using throughout class. We finish with a short relaxation exercise. Bring a mat or towel if you like

Afro-Brazilian Dance
Badaró's high-energy class is nonstop fun! Movements describing the different Orixas work your whole body from head to toe, making you feel strong and energized! Be ready to sweat and dance with your whole body & spirit. Often, Badaró mixes things up by throwing in some Samba Reggae, one of his specialties. Most people go barefoot for this class, some wear a soft dance slipper or jazz shoe. You may wish to wear kneepads, since there is sometimes a bit of floorwork.
